A Memorable Memorial Day Memorial Day 2009 was one for the record books because not only was the traditional parade held under clear, sunny skies (no first there) but also the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center opened its doors to the public for the first time. Affordable Housing Proposal Approved Unanimously at Town Meeting At the Special Town Meeting held Thursday Feb. 11, at the Katharine Hepburn Cultuarl Arts Center, there were three items on the agenda. Census Workers Start Visits in Local Area Starting in early May, look for the 2010 Census takers working in your neighborhood. Census 2010 is underway. Census takers, also called “enumerators,” will soon be visiting homes, apartment buildings and other places where people live in Old Saybrook. It was a brilliantly sunny afternoon July 11, when the first annual drum corps parade marched along Main Street in Old Saybrook to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Ancient Mariners. Final Budget Discussions at Town Meeting Tuesday A Special Town meeting will be held tonight, Tuesday, May 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the Old Saybrook Middle School at which a number of hand votes will be taken prior to the budget referendum itself on Tuesday, June 2, when voting machines will be used. Old Saybrook Fire Receives $82.5K Grant from FEMA The Old Saybrook Fire Department received word last Friday that they are the recipient of an $82,595 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for firefighter recruitment and retention. $60K is earmarked for college and trade school tuition reimbursement for firefighters wishing to commute from Old Saybrook for their education and the remaining $22.5K to produce a TV recruiting commercial. Town Looks at a Budgetary Mixed Bag According to Town Treasurer Bob Fish, it’s not “voodoo economics,” but rather a truism of the budget process: As the Grand List goes up, a town’s mill rate goes down. A Tremendous Torchlight Parade Despite the bitter cold Saturday night, it seemed as though the whole town had turned out for Old Saybrook's traditional annual Christmas Torchlight Parade and Muster.
